Identification & best seen

~5 cm; drab warty back, brilliant yellow-and-black underside; heart-shaped pupils.

Habitat & where to see

Shallow temporary pools, springs and wet ruts in hills and mountains.

Fun fact

Threatened, it arches into the 'unken reflex', showing its bright belly to say: don't eat me.
