Not a snake but a legless lizard — smooth, harmless and secretive, found under stones and logs in damp gardens and woodland.

Identification & best seen

Up to ~45 cm; smooth, glossy, grey-bronze and snake-like, but with eyelids it can blink (snakes cannot).

Habitat & where to see

Damp meadows, gardens, woodland edges; often under logs and stones.

Fun fact

Blink to tell them apart: slow worms have eyelids, snakes do not.
