The king of Bosnian foraging — a meaty, nutty boletus that flushes in the beech and conifer forests after autumn rain. Hugely prized, dried for winter and sold by the roadside.

Identification & best seen

Fat pale stem, brown bun-like cap, and a sponge of pores (not gills) underneath that doesn't bruise blue.

Beech, oak and conifer forests, late summer to autumn.
