A large, marble-patterned trout native to the Adriatic-basin rivers including the Neretva — a prized, threatened fish whose pure populations are squeezed by hybridisation with stocked brown trout.

Identification & best seen

Olive-green with a fine marbled (vermiculated) pattern; grows large in clean cold rivers.

Habitat & where to see

Cold, clear Adriatic-basin rivers — notably the Neretva system.

Fun fact

It can grow well over a metre, making it one of the largest trout in Europe.
