Identification & best seen

Up to ~1.2 m; olive-grey with a yellow-and-black 'collar' behind the head; excellent swimmer.

Habitat & where to see

Riverbanks, lakes, marshes and damp grassland nationwide.

Fun fact

When cornered it can feign death — flipping belly-up with mouth agape — or release a foul musk.
