A shy freshwater turtle that basks on logs and stones at the edge of still and slow water, sliding in at the first sign of movement.

Identification & best seen

Up to ~20 cm; dark shell flecked with fine yellow spots; webbed feet.

Habitat & where to see

Marshes, oxbows, ponds and slow rivers — notably Hutovo Blato.

Fun fact

It is one of only two native freshwater turtles in Europe.
