pčelarica · Merops apiaster
Arguably Bosnia's most colourful bird — a tropical-looking jewel of turquoise, gold and chestnut that arrives each summer to nest in sandy riverbanks, especially in Herzegovina.
Identification & best seen
Slim, rainbow-coloured, with a curved bill and a liquid 'prrrip' call from overhead.
Habitat & where to see
Warm open country, river bluffs and karst, summer only.
It catches bees and wasps on the wing, then rubs out the sting on a branch before swallowing.
