The wild horses of Livno
On the high karst plateau above Livno, hundreds of free-roaming horses have become one of Bosnia's most unexpected wildlife spectacles.
Decades ago, as machines replaced working horses on the farms around Livno, many animals were simply released onto the high plateaus to fend for themselves. They didn't just survive — they thrived. Today several hundred free-roaming horses graze the Kruzi plateau and the slopes around it, living entirely wild, foaling in spring and moving in loose herds across the karst.
Watching them gallop across the open highland, manes flying, with the bare mountains behind, is a genuinely stirring sight — and an easy one, if you're patient and respectful. The horses are wary; keep your distance, stay quiet, and let them set the terms. Early morning and late afternoon are best, when the light is low and the herds are on the move.
The Livno horses share these mountains with the wider drama of the Dinarics — wild, empty, and far from the tourist trail. Bring a full tank of fuel, good shoes, and time.
